Sabrina Scharf

Sabrina Scharf (born Sandra Mae Trentman; October 17, 1943) is an American actress, activist, and real estate developer whose life story reads like a classic Hollywood script—complete with a teenage elopement, a stint as a Playboy Bunny, and a near-miss entry into high-level politics. Born in Delphos, Ohio, her journey to the West Coast was anything but linear. At just 15, fearing it was her only shot at marriage, she eloped with her high school algebra teacher—a union that was eventually annulled three years later.

After a brief foray into pre-med studies at the University of Arizona, she reinvented herself as Sabrina Scharf (using her mother’s maiden name) and headed for New York. Her entry into the arts was serendipitous; a chance meeting at a Greenwich Village diner led to an assistant role in an off-Broadway theater. Despite having no initial intention of acting, she eventually landed on the radar of Columbia Studios. Signed as one of twelve low-salaried contract players, she made her screen debut in an episode of Gidget in 1965.

Scharf is perhaps best recognized by cult cinema and sci-fi fans for two iconic roles in the late 1960s. She played Sarah, one of the members of the hippie commune, in the counterculture landmark Easy Rider (1969), appearing alongside Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson. On television, she achieved immortality among Trekkies as Miramanee, the tribal priestess and love interest of Captain Kirk in the Star Trek episode “The Paradise Syndrome” (1968). Her career during this era was a whirlwind of guest spots on major series like Gunsmoke, The Wild Wild West, and Hogan’s Heroes.

In the 1970s, Scharf shifted her focus from the screen to the political arena. In 1972, she ran for the California State Senate, aiming to become the first woman elected to that house. In a stunningly close race, she lost by a mere 700 votes out of a quarter-million cast. Her political journey didn’t just end at the polls; her husband, legendary comedy writer Bob Schiller, and his partner Bob Weiskopf, used her campaign as the direct inspiration for the “Maude Runs for Congress” storyline in the hit sitcom Maude.

Following her acting and political pursuits, Scharf transitioned into a successful career as a real estate developer in the Greater Los Angeles area. Her legacy is that of a woman who refused to be pigeonholed—moving effortlessly from the Playboy Club and the deck of the Enterprise to the front lines of California politics and the world of property development.
