While he is most widely recognized for his starring roles in iconic series like The Big Valley, his career began in the final years of the studio system, where he quickly proved his versatility across drama, Westerns, and even cult horror.
Long is fondly remembered by genre fans for his role as Lance Schroeder in William Castle’s 1959 masterpiece House on Haunted Hill. Playing the skeptical but courageous test pilot, he provided a vital heroic presence alongside Vincent Price. His performance helped ground the film’s theatrical “gimmicks” with a sense of genuine stakes, making him a standout in one of the most celebrated horror films of the era.
