Mala Powers

Mala Powers (December 20, 1931 – June 11, 2007) was a talented American actress who, after a dramatic and critically acclaimed start to her career, overcame a life-threatening illness to become a staple of B-movie genre films and later, a world-renowned acting teacher.

After being discovered as a teenager, Powers was signed by Stanley Kramer and achieved immediate recognition for her first major role as the beautiful Roxane in the 1950 classic Cyrano de Bergerac, a performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Her promising career was tragically interrupted in 1951 when she contracted a blood disease while on a USO tour in Korea. A severe allergic reaction to the treatment nearly killed her and required a long and difficult recovery.

Powers courageously returned to acting and became a popular leading lady in a variety of genre films. She is well-remembered by sci-fi fans for her roles in The Colossus of New York (1958) and Flight of the Lost Balloon (1961), and also appeared in Westerns like Rage at Dawn (1955). In her later life, she dedicated herself to preserving the legacy of her mentor, Michael Chekhov, becoming a master acting teacher and a co-founder of the National Michael Chekhov Association.
