Kay Christopher (June 3, 1926 – June 18, 2012) was an American actress and model who became a familiar face in the adventure and mystery cinema of the late 1940s and early 50s. Born in New Rochelle, New York, to a Methodist family—her father was a newspaper editor and her mother a librarian—she first rose to prominence as a highly successful pin-up model. Her striking looks earned her the title of “Miss Photo Flash 1945,” a success that caught the attention of RKO Radio Pictures and led to a film contract that launched her Hollywood career.

Her screen debut came in the 1946 drama The Locket, where she played an uncredited role as a bridesmaid. However, she quickly moved into more substantial parts, achieving her most enduring fame as Tess Trueheart in the 1947 mystery Dick Tracy’s Dilemma. Starring opposite Ralph Byrd, she brought a sense of grounded charm and resilience to the role of the famous detective’s love interest, helping to define the look and feel of the live-action comic strip adaptation. This role established her as a reliable leading lady for the studio’s procedural and crime-drama offerings.

Throughout the late 1940s, Christopher appeared in a variety of genre pieces, including the film noir Desperate (1947) and the legal drama I Cheated the Law (1949). As the industry shifted toward the 1950s, she showcased her versatility by moving into Westerns and lighthearted comedies, with roles in Code of the Silver Sage (1950) and the popular comic strip adaptation Gasoline Alley (1951), as well as its sequel, Corky of Gasoline Alley. She also made several appearances in early television, including a recurring role on the game show Doctor I.Q. and a guest spot on Lux Video Theatre.

In 1954, at the height of her professional activity, Christopher chose to retire from acting and modeling following her marriage to Donald Griffin. While she briefly emerged from retirement for a 1958 appearance on The Perry Como Show, she dedicated much of her later life to her family and raised three children. She eventually settled in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she passed away in 2012 at the age of 86. Kay Christopher is remembered as a performer who perfectly embodied the transition from the glamour of wartime modeling to the hardworking professionalism of the Hollywood studio system.
