Jacques Aubuchon (October 30, 1924 – December 28, 1991) was a versatile and enduring character actor whose career thrived across the stage, the big screen, and the burgeoning world of television. Born Jacques Georges Aubuchon in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, he was a World War II veteran who served as a French interpreter in the U.S. Army. After the war, he brought his commanding presence and linguistic skills to the Broadway stage, appearing in acclaimed productions like The Madwoman of Chaillot and Cyrano de Bergerac before transitioning to the silver screen in the early 1950s.

Aubuchon quickly became a mainstay of the Hollywood studio system, often cast in “heavy” or ethnic roles that utilized his imposing physique and ability to master various accents. In 1953, he delivered a memorable performance in the underwater epic Beneath the 12-Mile Reef as Demetrios Sofotes, a money-lender whose presence adds tension to the lives of the Greek sponge divers. His work during this era was prolific, including a turn as the infamous Emperor Nero in the historical drama The Silver Chalice (1954) and a role in the cult action classic Thunder Road (1958) alongside Robert Mitchum. He even made a mark in family entertainment, appearing as Stefano in the 1959 Disney comedy The Shaggy Dog.

As the television industry exploded in the 1960s, Aubuchon became one of its most recognizable guest stars. He amassed over 300 television appearances, becoming a favorite for directors of everything from gritty Westerns like Gunsmoke and Bonanza to lighthearted sitcoms. His most iconic television role was arguably the crooked and comical Polynesian chief, Pali Urulu, on the hit series McHale’s Navy (1962–1964). He also brought his talent for authority figures and villains to other popular shows of the time, playing General von Kattenhorn in Hogan’s Heroes and Lieutenant Maurois in the crime drama Paris 7000.

Aubuchon’s legacy continued through his family; he was the father of successful television writer and producer Remi Aubuchon and the father-in-law of actor Dirk Blocker (known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine). He remained active in the industry until his passing in 1991, leaving behind a massive filmography that serves as a testament to the “working actor” who could effortlessly jump between the halls of ancient Rome, the islands of the South Pacific, and the high-tension courtrooms of Perry Mason.
