Giacomo Rossi Stuart (August 25, 1925 – October 20, 1994) was a mainstay of Italian genre cinema, a prolific actor who successfully navigated the worlds of swashbuckling adventures, science fiction, and gritty crime thrillers. Born in Todi, Italy to an Italian father and a Scottish mother, Stuart began his adult life as a highly accomplished athlete, competing in the pentathlon before turning his focus to the performing arts. His dedication to the craft led him to New York City, where he studied at the prestigious Actors Studio.

Often credited as Jack Stuart, he appeared in over 80 films throughout a career that spanned nearly four decades. Between the late 1950s and 1970s, he was one of the most recognizable faces in European “B-movies.” He showcased his physical prowess in various “sword-and-sandal” and adventure films, portraying Athos in Zorro and the Three Musketeers (1963) and appearing alongside Alain Delon in Zorro (1975). He even had uncredited appearances in major Hollywood productions filmed in Italy, such as the 1957 adaptation of A Farewell to Arms and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972), where he played a G.I.

To fans of cult science fiction, Stuart is particularly well-known for two major contributions. He starred as Commander Rod Jackson in War Between the Planets (1966), part of the Gamma One film series. However, his most haunting role was that of Ben Cortman in the 1964 landmark The Last Man on Earth. Playing the former friend turned vampiric tormentor of Vincent Price’s character, Stuart provided the film with its most persistent and chilling antagonist, capturing the relentless nature of the creatures in Richard Matheson’s original story.

Giacomo Rossi Stuart passed away in 1994 at the age of 69. He left behind a legacy as a versatile and disciplined performer whose bilingual background and athletic skill made him a unique asset to the international film industry. His son, Kim Rossi Stuart, has since carried on the family legacy as a celebrated Italian actor and director.
