Frank Latimore

Frank Latimore (September 28, 1925 – November 29, 1998) was a suave and versatile American leading man who enjoyed a unique career that spanned the glitz of 20th Century Fox musicals, a prolific period as a star of European adventure epics, and a late-career resurgence on American television.

Born into a prominent family with deep New England roots, Latimore began his acting journey in summer stock alongside his lifelong friend Lloyd Bridges. His classic “all-American” good looks quickly landed him a contract with 20th Century Fox, where he appeared in popular hits such as the musical The Dolly Sisters (1945), Three Little Girls in Blue (1946), and the psychological thriller Shock (1946).

In the late 1940s, Latimore made the unconventional move to Europe, where he became a major star of international “swashbuckler” films. He spent years in Italy, Spain, and France, starring in dozens of action-packed features like The Revenge of the Musketeers (1954) and Zorro the Avenger (1959). His ability to transition from Hollywood glamour to European heroics made him a globally recognized face throughout the 1950s and ’60s.

Returning to the United States, Latimore reinvented himself as a television mainstay. He is perhaps best remembered by modern audiences for his role as the compassionate Dr. Ed Coleridge on the popular soap opera Ryan’s Hope, as well as for his work on Guiding Light. His personal life was equally fascinating; he was married to opera singer Rukmini Sukarno, the daughter of the first President of Indonesia. He remained active in the arts until his death in 1998, leaving behind a legacy as a truly international performer.
