Douglas Kennedy (September 14, 1915 – August 10, 1973) was a prolific American character actor who, with his tall, rugged build and authoritative presence, became a staple of Hollywood Westerns and crime dramas for over three decades.
A decorated veteran of World War II, Kennedy was a versatile actor who could be equally convincing as a hero or a villain. He appeared in numerous A-list classics, playing the detective who questions Humphrey Bogart in the film noir masterpiece Dark Passage (1947) and appeared in other notable films such as The Fountainhead (1949) and East Side, West Side (1949). He also took the lead in a number of B-movie Westerns, starring in films like The Lone Gun (1954).
Douglas Kennedy found his greatest fame on television, starring as the titular hero in the syndicated series Steve Donovan, Western Marshal (1955-1956). He was also one of the most in-demand guest stars of the era, appearing multiple times on nearly every major Western series, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and Wagon Train, and in 11 different episodes of Perry Mason, often playing the murder victim or the killer.
