Donna Douglas (September 26, 1932 – January 1, 2015) was an American actress and singer who became one of the most popular and beloved television stars of the 1960s with her iconic portrayal of the beautiful, kind-hearted tomboy Elly May Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies.
A former beauty queen, Douglas had several notable early roles, including a memorable appearance in the classic Twilight Zone episode “The Eye of the Beholder” and co-starring opposite Elvis Presley in the film Frankie and Johnny (1966). However, it was her role from 1962 to 1971 as the critter-loving, beautiful but naive daughter of Jed Clampett that made her a household name and a true television icon.
After her acting career, Donna Douglas remained a beloved public figure. She embraced the wholesome image of her famous character, becoming a successful gospel singer, an inspirational speaker at churches and community events, and an author of children’s books, securing her legacy as a symbol of sweet-natured innocence in classic television history.
