Cornel Wilde (October 13, 1912 – October 16, 1989) was a dynamic presence in Hollywood, known not only as a dashing leading man but also as a pioneering independent filmmaker. Born in Hungary and raised in New York, Wilde was a world-class fencer who qualified for the 1936 U.S. Olympic team but ultimately chose to pursue a career on the Broadway stage. He made his theatrical debut in 1935, and after several years of small, uncredited film appearances, he signed a contract with 20th Century Fox that would eventually cement his status as a major star.
His breakthrough came in 1945 with the biographical film A Song to Remember, in which he portrayed the composer Frédéric Chopin. He starred in and directed the gritty film noir The Big Combo (1955) and later achieved critical acclaim for the visceral survival thriller The Naked Prey (1965), which he both directed and starred in. Wilde continued to work steadily in both film and television through the 1970s and early 80s, lending his seasoned presence to projects like the disaster epic Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979).
