For generations of television viewers, his commanding voice, black mask, and unwavering moral code made him the absolute embodiment of a righteous hero.

After a career in film serials, Moore was cast in the title role of the 1949 television series The Lone Ranger. Paired with Jay Silverheels as his faithful companion Tonto, and set to the thundering theme of the William Tell overture, the show was the first Western created specifically for television and became the fledgling ABC network’s first major hit. The series, which ran with Moore in the lead from 1949-1951 and 1954-1957, became a cultural phenomenon and earned an Emmy Award nomination in 1950.

Moore took his role as a hero to heart, making countless public appearances in costume for decades and living by the character’s moral creed. His profound dedication ensured that for millions, Clayton Moore wasn’t just the actor who played The Lone Ranger—he was The Lone Ranger.
