Clarence Wilson (November 17, 1876 – October 5, 1941) was a prolific American character actor, one of the most recognizable “grouches” of Hollywood’s Golden Age, who specialized in playing sour-faced misers, killjoys, and petty tyrants.
With his bald head, spectacles, and perpetual scowl, Wilson was a fixture in many classic films of the 1930s. He had memorable supporting roles in the newspaper comedy The Front Page (1931), the Best Picture winner You Can’t Take It With You (1938), and as the comically stubborn Jeff Tuttle in Ruggles of Red Gap (1935).
He is also fondly remembered by fans of the Our Gang comedy shorts, where he frequently played the mean old man the kids had to outsmart, such as Mr. Crutch in Shrimps for a Day. His final role was fittingly as a school board chairman in the Our Gang film Come Back, Miss Pipps, which was released just after his death in 1941.
