Carleton Carpenter (July 10, 1926 – January 31, 2022) was a remarkably multifaceted entertainer whose career spanned the worlds of magic, Broadway, hit records, and classic cinema. Born in Bennington, Vermont, he began his professional journey as a magician and a circus clown before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, his lanky frame and infectious, youthful energy made him a natural fit for the booming post-war Broadway scene, where he debuted in Brighten the Corner and eventually caught the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
He is perhaps most famously remembered by film fans for his delightful screen partnership with Debbie Reynolds. The duo became a sensation in the 1950 musical Three Little Words, where they performed the song “I Wanna Be Loved by You.” Their chemistry was so successful that MGM immediately paired them again for Two Weeks with Love (1950). In that film, they performed the novelty song “Abba Daba Honeymoon,” which became a million-selling gold record and a definitive pop culture moment of the decade. Carpenter’s ability to blend comedic timing with genuine musical talent made him a standout star during the twilight of the great MGM musical era.
As the studio system evolved, Carpenter’s creative output expanded far beyond acting. He was a prolific songwriter, composing material for various artists and even writing the lyrics for the official song of the Peace Corps. His restless creative spirit eventually led him to a successful second career as a novelist. He authored several mystery novels throughout the 1970s and 80s, including titles like Deadhead, Games Murderers Play, and The Peabody Experience. He was also a frequent guest on television, appearing in everything from early variety programs to classic series like The Ann Sothern Show and Father Knows Best.
Carpenter remained an active and beloved member of the theatrical community for the rest of his long life, often performing in cabaret shows and regional theater well into his eighties. He published his memoir, The Absolute Joy of Work, in 2016, which chronicled his decades of experiences in the “Golden Age” of show business. When he passed away in 2022 at the age of 95, he left behind a legacy as a true “Renaissance man” of entertainment—a performer who could charm an audience with a card trick, a song, or a well-crafted mystery novel just as easily as he could on the silver screen.
