Bud Abbott (October 2, 1897 – April 24, 1974) was widely regarded as the greatest straight man in the history of comedy, a performer whose impeccable timing and commanding presence provided the essential foundation for the legendary duo Abbott and Costello. Born William Alexander Abbott into a circus family in Asbury Park, New Jersey, he was immersed in the world of entertainment from birth. Before finding global fame, he worked his way through the grueling burlesque circuit, where he refined the art of the “straight” role—a position that required not just a serious demeanor, but a lightning-fast ability to guide and pace the chaos of a comedy partner.
His partnership with Lou Costello, formed in the early 1930s, propelled the duo to the heights of superstardom across every available medium. They became household names through their radio appearances and a string of massively successful films for Universal Pictures, starting with the military comedy Buck Privates in 1941. Their most enduring contribution to American culture remains the “Who’s on First?” routine, a masterclass in verbal wordplay and rhythmic delivery that perfectly showcased Abbott’s ability to maintain a straight face while escalating a nonsensical situation to the point of absurdity. During the 1940s, they were among the highest-paid and most popular entertainers in the world, even helping to save Universal Studios from financial ruin.
