Art Ellison

Art Ellison (1899–1994) was a prolific American character actor and a cornerstone of the Midwestern filmmaking scene, whose remarkably long career spanned the height of the industrial film era and the birth of independent horror cinema. While he spent nearly five decades working for the Kansas City Power and Light Company, his dedication to the performing arts led him to become one of the most frequently seen faces in educational films across the United States.

Born Arthur Wayland Ellison in Potsdam, New York, Ellison eventually settled in Kansas City, Missouri, where he became a mainstay of local theater. For years, he honed his craft in scores of amateur stage productions, building a reputation for reliability and poise that caught the eye of professional filmmakers. Director Herk Harvey once speculated that Ellison had likely appeared in more industrial and educational films than any other actor in the country, noting that he had even worked under the direction of a young Robert Altman during the future legend’s early days in Kansas City.

To international audiences and horror enthusiasts, Ellison is best remembered for his role as the Minister in the 1962 cult masterpiece Carnival of Souls. His performance provided a crucial moral anchor and a sense of small-town normalcy amidst the film’s haunting, surreal descent into psychological terror. His ability to bring natural dignity to his roles made him a favorite of the Centron Corporation, where he appeared in dozens of instructional shorts that were screened in classrooms and offices nationwide for generations.

Ellison remained a vibrant part of the Kansas City cultural community until his passing at the age of 95. His legacy is that of a quintessential character actor—a man whose face was recognized by millions of students and film buffs alike, and whose work helped define the “Lawrence school” of independent filmmaking.
