Initially establishing herself as a model, she successfully transitioned into acting in the mid-1950s. Her early career saw her performing on the stage and in Canadian television before making her motion picture debut in the 1957 British comedy Lucky Jim. Her poise and dramatic range soon made her a sought-after talent for both character-driven independent films and high-profile Hollywood productions.

Acker’s film career reached a significant milestone in 1967 with her performance in the influential neo-noir thriller Point Blank. Portraying Lynne, the wife of Lee Marvin’s relentless protagonist, she became part of a film that is now celebrated for its innovative style and gritty atmosphere. She continued to be a prominent figure in Canadian cinema as well, taking lead roles in projects such as the 1969 drama Waiting for Caroline and the film Don’t Let the Angels Fall.
