Jana Taylor (July 27, 1943 – April 27, 2004) was an American actress who holds a special place in television history as one of the original pioneers of the modern daytime soap opera. Born in Far Rockaway, Queens, she brought a refined yet vulnerable presence to the screen, a quality that allowed her to navigate between prestigious dramas, gritty counterculture films, and long-running television serials.
She is most widely recognized for her role as Angie Costello on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. As an original cast member when the show premiered in 1963, Taylor helped establish the dramatic foundation of what would become one of the most enduring programs in television history. Her tenure from 1963 to 1965 made her a familiar face in American households, and in a touching tribute to her roots, she returned to the show nearly thirty years later for its 30th-anniversary episode in 1993, which marked her final appearance on screen.
Taylor’s early film career began with significant momentum. In 1961, she appeared in the independent drama A Cold Wind in August and had an uncredited role as Elsa Scheffler in the Academy Award-winning masterpiece Judgment at Nuremberg. As the 1960s progressed, she leaned into the decade’s shift toward rebellious cinema, portraying Abigale in the 1967 biker cult classic Hells Angels on Wheels, where she shared the screen with Adam Roarke and Jack Nicholson. Her filmography eventually concluded in 1984 with a role in the sci-fi thriller Dreamscape.
In addition to her work in daytime drama, Taylor was a prolific guest star during the silver age of television. She made memorable appearances in a variety of genres, from the legal puzzles of Perry Mason and the spy comedy of Get Smart to the high-adventure of The Wild Wild West. She also held a recurring role as Susan McAdams Williams in the sitcom revival Make Room for Granddaddy (1970–1971), playing the daughter-in-law to legendary entertainer Danny Thomas.
Jana Taylor passed away in 2004 at the age of 60. She is remembered as a versatile performer who could hold her own alongside Hollywood heavyweights and as a central figure in the birth of a television institution.
