Jessica Dragonette (February 14, 1900 – March 18, 1980) was one of the most beloved and recognizable voices of the early 20th century, a soprano whose crystalline tone earned her the title “The Princess of Song.” Born in Pennsylvania and educated in a convent, she brought a unique blend of operatic discipline and accessible charm to the burgeoning medium of radio. During the 1920s and 30s, she was a true pioneer, starring in high-profile programs like the Cities Service Concerts and The Palmolive Beauty Box Theatre. At a time when radio was the primary source of home entertainment, Dragonette’s popularity was so immense that she consistently topped listener polls as the most popular female singer in the country.
Her legacy in animation was cemented in 1939 when she was chosen by the Fleischer Studios to provide the singing voice for Princess Glory in the Technicolor epic Gulliver’s Travels. Her ethereal, soaring vocals provided the perfect romantic counterpoint to the film’s high-adventure narrative. She notably performed the beautiful ballads “Faithful” and “Forever,” duetting with the legendary crooner Lanny Ross. While she did not provide the character’s speaking voice, her musical contributions gave the Princess a sense of grace and dignity that helped make the film a landmark in the Golden Age of Animation.
Beyond her entertainment career, Dragonette was a tireless patriot. During World War II, she dedicated herself to the war effort, selling millions of dollars in war bonds and traveling extensively to perform for troops in hospitals and camps. She was also a prolific author, writing several books including her autobiography, Faith is a Song.
