Tito Vuolo (March 22, 1893 – September 14, 1962) was a quintessential character actor whose warm, excitable, and often comedic screen presence made him one of Hollywood’s most recognizable Italian-born performers. Born in Gragnano, Italy, Vuolo immigrated to the United States and spent decades honing his craft on the stage. He toured extensively across the country in various theater troupes, developing a masterful sense of timing and a distinct, energetic persona that caught the eye of Hollywood scouts during the 1940s.
Once he transitioned to film, Vuolo became the industry’s “go-to” actor for characters that required an authentic Italian flair. He appeared in over 50 films, frequently playing barbers, restaurant owners, or neighbors who provided much-needed humanity and levity to high-stakes dramas. His filmography includes some of the most celebrated projects of the era, such as the holiday classic The Bishop’s Wife (1947), the gritty noir Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), and the musical extravaganza The Great Caruso (1951). One of his most memorable genre turns came in the 1957 science fiction classic 20 Million Miles to Earth. In the film, he played the role of the Commissioner, working alongside stars Joan Taylor and William Hopper.
