Charles Meredith (August 27, 1894 – November 28, 1964) was an American actor with a remarkable and unusual career, rising to fame as a romantic leading man in the silent era, only to leave Hollywood for two decades before returning as a prolific character actor.
During the silent era, Meredith was a popular star, playing the handsome hero opposite top actresses of the day like Blanche Sweet and Mary Miles Minter in numerous romantic dramas and comedies. In 1924, at the height of his success, he walked away from the screen to focus on a career in live theatre, where he remained for over 20 years.
He returned to Hollywood in 1947 and began a new, prolific phase of his career as a distinguished character actor. He was often cast as doctors, judges, and officials, with a notable role as a scientist in the sci-fi classic The Thing from Another World (1951). On television, he was a familiar face on shows like The Lone Ranger and is well-remembered by sci-fi fans as Secretary Drake in the syndicated series, Rocky Jones, Space Ranger.
