Anne Gwynne (December 10, 1918 – March 31, 2003) was a glamorous American actress who became a top star for Universal Pictures in the 1940s, celebrated as one of cinema’s first great “scream queens” and a beloved pin-up girl of the World War II era.

Signed by Universal at age 20, Gwynne quickly became a studio favorite, co-starring in the sci-fi serial Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940). She found her greatest fame in a series of classic horror films, including The Black Cat (1941) and House of Frankenstein (1944), where she shared the screen with legends like Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.

In addition to her prolific film career of nearly 60 movies, Gwynne was a television pioneer. In 1947, she co-starred in Public Prosecutor, one of the very first filmed dramatic series produced for television. Her work cemented her legacy as both a horror icon and a trailblazer in the early days of a new medium.
