Shemp Howard (born Shmuel Horwitz; March 11, 1895 – November 22, 1955) was a beloved American comedian and actor, celebrated as a pivotal and founding member of the legendary comedy trio, The Three Stooges. He was part of the original act in the 1920s while they were still known as “Ted Healy and his Stooges,” but left in 1932 to embark on a successful solo film career. Following his younger brother Curly’s debilitating stroke in 1946, Shemp loyally returned to the team, rejoining his brother Moe and partner Larry Fine to keep the act alive. He remained an essential part of the trio until his own death in 1955, cementing his unique place in comedy history as the Stooge who bookended the group’s most famous era.
