In episode 1, the struggling Shady Rest Hotel is put in a tight spot when a no-nonsense vice president Homer Bedloe (Charles Lane) from the C & FW Railroad is sent to investigate the overlooked spur line between Hooterville and Pixley. As he inspects the neglected train route, the residents of Shady Rest must work together to save their beloved hotel.
