Cyril Smith (April 4, 1892 – March 5, 1963) was a prolific Scottish character actor who became a familiar and welcome face in British cinema for over three decades. Known for his stout build and ability to play both pompous and kindly characters, he was a fixture in early British sound films, with notable roles in the popular musical The Good Companions (1933), the crime thriller The Frog (1937), and the classic comedy Sailor Beware! (1955).
He is also widely remembered by a generation of television viewers for his recurring role as the wise and sometimes bumbling wizard Merlin in the popular 1950s adventure series, The Adventures of Sir Lancelot.
